The dress code can be a controversial topic in high school. Some schools have strict uniforms while others are more relaxed, allowing students to wear whatever they're comfortable with. We wanted to know how the students at Pamlico feel about our school dress code, so we asked them a couple questions!
Have you ever been dress coded before and if so, why were you dress coded?
Do you think the dress code targets a certain gender?
If you could change one thing about the dress code, what would it be?
Addi Nunley- 9th Grade
Moriah Phillips- 11th Grade:
"Not that I remember."
"Definitely."(Women)
"I would change the fact that we can't wear leggings because honestly I don't understand the difference between flare leggings and regular leggings. I think that's kind of stupid."
Jake Willis- 9th Grade:
"No."
"Yes, females."
"Nothing because I never get dress coded."
Addi Nunley- 9th Grade:
"Yes, too much of my shoulder was out of my shirt."
"Yes, very much so." (Women)
"Just letting people wear what they want but still being appropriate with what they wear."
Sage Bryant- 12th Grade:
"No."
"Yes, certain women who are more curvy."
"I would dress code people a lot more. Some people walk around with different parts of their body showing and it's very innapropriate."
Alyssa Anderson- 11th Grade:
"Yes, I have been dress coded before. I was wearing shorts that were too short, apparently, because I have long legs. I feel like that's discrimination."
"Yes, I've seen lots of guys wear very short shorts, even ones from the women's aisle. So he can wear it, but I can't? I think that's wrong."
"I would change the rules so that we could wear three-finger width tank tops. My old school used to do that so I think we should be able to as well."
Krista Ballance- 11th Grade:
"I have, it was last year. I had holes in the knees of my jeans. But personally, I think we should be able to wear holes on our knees because we are allowed to wear shorts above our knees while still being in dress code."
"Yes." (Women)
"Just for it to be more fair and inclusive."
There were a variety of responses to each question, but all 6 students agreed on one thing; the dress code tends to be more restrictive on women. As of now, there isn't much that can be done by students to change the dress code, as it is up to the school board to make those kinds of decisions. However, it seems to be the general consensus that the dress code could be made "more fair and inclusive."
